Narrator: This is a conversation between a bartender and a young man in a Blues Café.
Bartender: Welcome to the bar! Tonight, we are having a popular blues musician. Please enjoy.
Young man: Oh, I will love to because I have never listened to blues before. And uh…, I guess I should get a drink. What will you recommend me?
Bartender: Can you show me your liquor ID? You only look like a 16-year-old teenager.
Narrator: The young man showed him his ID.
Bartender: Ok, thank you! So, what kind of drink would you like?
Young man: In the past, I usually just have a tomato juice but tonight I would like to have a cocktail of your choice.
Bartender: So, I will get you a Mojito. It has mint and lime, and it is a very popular drink in Mexico, where I came from.
Narrator: The Bartender placed a bottle of water and a coaster on the bar counter and started to make the drink.
Bartender: Here is your drink, I hope you will like it. You look kind of sad. Are you in trouble?
Young man: (Sighed) I guess I am kind of home sick. This afternoon, I went for a job interview at a hotel.
Bartender: From your look, I guess you did not get the job.
Young man: You are right on. I just came to Canada three months ago. Back in Turkey, I worked as a manager in a hotel. However, when I went for the job interview, I was told that to be a manager, I needed fluent English to manage the staff. In addition, I was informed that I needed to have some work experience in Canada. I was offered a job as a bell boy instead. Obviously, there will be a big drop in my salary. But I guess I will gain Canadian work experience and many opportunities to talk in English. I need a job and so I accepted the position. So that is why I look kind of sad. You come from Mexico, so did you have a similar experience as mine?
Bartender: Yes, I am from Mexico. Like you, I used to train people to mix cocktails in a technical college. My English is not good enough to teach at a college. So, I get a job here as a Bartender in this blues café. However, I am young, and I have an optimistic mindset. I believed that if I work hard enough, my English will get better. In the next 5 to 10 years, I guess my English will improve especially I am taking English classes during the day. I am hopeful that in the future, I will teach in the college again. So, do not be discouraged, you will gradually get to you goal. Just give yourself time to grow.
Young man: Thank you for listening to my story. Having this conversation and advise from you, I am already feeling much better.
Bartender: It is my pleasure.
